Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Amidst the NBA's investigation into suspicious betting activities surrounding his younger brother, Jontay Porter, Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. has come to his defense, asserting his confidence in Jontay's integrity and love for the game of basketball.

"I know Jontay loves the game of basketball. You know he's really excited to play, he's really excited to play for the Raptors... I've known my brother my whole life. I know what type of dude he is and I know he's excited to play basketball and I highly doubt he would do anything to put that in jeopardy."

Speaking to reporters after the Nuggets' game against the Phoenix Suns, Michael Porter Jr. expressed his belief that Jontay would never jeopardize his NBA career through involvement in gambling-related activities. Despite the ongoing investigation into prop bets related to Jontay's performance in specific games, Michael Porter Jr. emphasized his brother's passion for basketball and his commitment to the sport.

Having grown up together, Michael Porter Jr. attests to knowing his brother's character and firmly believes that Jontay is genuinely excited to be playing for the Toronto Raptors. With Jontay's absence from recent Raptors games due to personal reasons, Michael Porter Jr. acknowledges the situation but remains steadfast in his support for his brother.

Jontay Porter's current contract with the Raptors is a two-way deal, underscoring his journey in the NBA. Despite his limited playing time and statistical contributions, Michael Porter Jr. highlights Jontay's dedication to the game and dismisses any notion that he would engage in activities that could jeopardize his career.

"Yeah, especially the last few years you hear more, you know people in the crowd saying what they need you to score tonight or you know what they don't want you to score every night.

"You're disappointing someone you're disappointing the people if you score too much because they may have bet on your under and you're disappointing people if you didn't score enough, so it's part of it's part of the game now."

"I think that it's obviously a dangerous habit. It's a dangerous advice for people. I think you know the love of money is the root of all evil."

"We get you know paid a lot of money to play this game and I know the people these fans they want to make some money as well. So if they want to put their hard earnings on us, you know, we appreciate that you put your trust in us, I guess."

Michael Porter Jr. also reflected on the pervasive influence of sports betting in professional basketball, acknowledging its growing prominence in recent years. He describes how spectators in the crowd often vocalize their betting interests, expressing their desires for specific player performances. Porter Jr. notes the dichotomy players face: either scoring too much, disappointing those who bet on the under, or scoring too little, disappointing others who wagered differently.

Acknowledging the prevalence of sports betting, Porter Jr. raises concerns about its potential dangers, labeling it a "dangerous vice" for individuals. He references the biblical adage that "the love of money is the root of all evil," suggesting that the pursuit of financial gain through betting can lead to morally questionable behavior.

Despite recognizing the financial incentives associated with sports betting, he underscores the need for players to remain focused on their game and not succumb to external pressures related to gambling.

Porter Jr. suggests that while players appreciate the financial support from fans who wager on their performances, they must also navigate the ethical implications of being the subject of betting interests. He emphasizes the responsibility players have to uphold the integrity of the game while acknowledging the desires of fans to engage in sports betting.

The backdrop of the NBA's investigation into gambling-related allegations involving Jontay Porter sheds light on the broader issue of sports betting's influence on professional basketball. As the investigation unfolds and the NBA continues to address issues surrounding sports betting, Michael Porter Jr.'s unwavering support for his brother underscores the importance of family and solidarity amidst challenging circumstances.

Jontay Porter Can Face Prison Time If Found Guilty

Jontay Porter, the backup center for the Toronto Raptors, finds himself under intense scrutiny as the NBA investigates irregularities surrounding bets placed on his recent performances in Raptors games. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) is closely monitoring the situation, as Ontario is the only province where registered private vendors can offer online sports betting.

As the regulatory body responsible for overseeing betting activities in the province, AGCO is tasked with safeguarding against various integrity issues, including odds manipulation and match-fixing. Given the potential implications of the investigation, AGCO is actively engaged with all relevant parties, including registered gaming operators, independent integrity monitors, and the Ontario Provincial Police.

The situation could escalate further if the investigation uncovers evidence of wrongdoing. Under the Criminal Code of Canada, cheating in games or betting with the intent to defraud someone is prohibited. If found guilty, Jontay Porter could face serious legal consequences, including the possibility of imprisonment.

The involvement of law enforcement underscores the gravity of the situation and the potential legal ramifications for Porter. While the NBA conducts its investigation into the betting irregularities, the provincial police will determine whether a criminal investigation is warranted based on the evidence uncovered.

As the investigation unfolds, the spotlight remains on Porter and the integrity of professional sports. The outcome of the investigation will not only impact Porter's career but also serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining the integrity and fairness of sports betting markets.
