Spurs already giving star rookie Victor Wembanyama a lot of power

The San Antonio Spurs are reportedly consulting with rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama regarding their roster moves. The 7-foot-4 big discussed his open communication with the front office when speaking with Matthew Tynan of the Corporate Knowledge newsletter.

"It's a lot of communication with the coaches and the front office, to know where we're comfortable with each other in the game and where we're not comfortable to know what kind of pieces we would need to add," Wembanyama said. "It's a lot of discussion, because ... the GM, the front office, they know their job. They can do almost anything with what we got today, but it's a matter of how well they understand us — the players and the coaches about where we want to go and how we want to develop."

Wembanyama is the Spurs franchise cornerstone. He's widely expected to develop into a superstar player in the NBA. His elite and unique skillset has already begun to set him apart from his peers. Some veteran talents within the league already view him as a top-20 player in the league.

It makes sense, then, that the Spurs would give Wembanyama a voice. They want their star talent to be happy. They want him to feel like he's helping the franchise move forward. Furthermore, he will likely have a good feel for what type of players would work well around him.

In 61 games this season, Wembanyama is averaging 20.7 points, 10.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists. He's shooting 46.4% from the field and 32.3% from three-point range. If what we're seeing from Wembanyama is his floor, then his ceiling will likely be unprecedented.

As such, the Spurs are wise to keep their star player happy. He will be one of the most talented players in the league before too long. Giving him a say on roster moves makes sense, even if it is a little early in his career.
